The Daily Colonist, January 10-14, 1915

#dailycolonist1915 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, from 100 years ago:

  • Sunday, January 10, 1915
    • Seattle court forbids a Chicago bank from charging a Washington State railway 8% interest on a bond based on Illinois usury law which limits interest to 7% [What the hell happened to laws like this?]
    • A four-page spread in the magazine section on the British Navy. [I've reproduced the spreads in full 2-up views because it's really the layout that struck me. I love the hand-drawn headlines, frames around the photos and captions. If you want to read the feature, here is the link: http://archive.org/stream/dailycolonist57y27uvic#page/n15/mode/1up ]
    • Several ads and ad illustrations that I liked.
  • Tuesday, January 12, 1915
    • Freighters now operating New York to Valdivostok via Panama Canal, saving 3,000 miles [5,000 km] off going the opposite direction, via the Suez Canal.
  • Wednesday, January 13, 1915
    • [nothing of note]
  • Thursday, January 14, 1915
    • Idea of a tunnel under the English Channel is revived [the article mistakenly says the previous attempt was abandoned in 1870, in fact it was started in 1870 with a geological survey and test tunnels were dug at both sides in 1881-1883 and may have actually been completed, but the British military kiboshed the project over fears of invasion. It would be tried again in the 1970s but abandoned in the financial crisis that was the catalyst for punk rock. It would be restarted in 1987 and finally finished in 1994.]
    • A photographic ad illustration used to promote women's wear white sale [i.e. a sexy underwear ad, 1915-style.]
