« previous next »#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today:
- Three British cruisers sunk by a German submarine in the North Sea, 1,460 dead.
- German use of electric searchlights detailed [which is another example of bizarre early use of modern technology as no one seems to have figured out that the searchlights not only allow the Germans to see what is going on, but completely at totally give away the German positions!]
- [The "Evil subhuman Huns" propaganda machine is in full swing with] stories of German atrocities: nurses killed in the bombing of Rheims, a little Belgian girl with her hands cut off by Germans, and [not included] another editorial on the evils of German culture.
- Genuine signs that things are serious, the entire winter rugby season has been canceled in Britain.
- Ads that caught my eye. [The pocket Kodak is particularly interesting. Note how the picture size is noted at 1⅝" x 2½" — because this predates enlargers. Prints were necessarily 1:1 with the film used.]
