« previous next »#dailycolonist1914 - News out of Victoria, British Columbia, 100 years ago today. Today's paper is the Monday "extra", and today's very slim. The first two pages have new news, but because that only represents one half of a full sheet of newsprint, the last to pages are all filler. Page three is made up completely of reprinted articles and the last page is another reprint of the map of Europe. But that first half-sheet is has a lot of content!
- Emperor Franz Joseph is on his deathbed. Remember that is was the assassination of his heir that started all this.
- Russians are advancing into Prussia [German territory]
- Japan officially declares war on Germany
- Bread riots in Berlin
- Australia to follow Canada's lead in prioritizing food exports, will not export food to any other countries until British needs are fully met.
- And the most fascinating thing in the paper today: a detailed article on a heretofore unknown artillery technology possessed by the French illustrating some of the horrors to come from industrial warfare and why this really should have been The War to End All Wars--a gun that uses a punch-card-like system on the the shell to deliver an air burst shell accurately at a rate of 40 shells per minute. Remember that this horrific technology is over 100 years old.
