The Daily Colonist, August 9, 1914

« previous next »

#dailycolonist1914 - This was a Sunday edition.

  • British expeditionary forces arrive in Belgium.
  • German and Austria threaten to declare war on Italy is they remain neutral (I could not help but hear Zap Brannigan's voice when reading this.)
  • Serbians have repulsed Austrians from Belgrade, now considering invading Bosnia to expand their own territory.
  • Austria considering attacking Russia.
  • The City Clerk and Mayor of Prince Rupert travel to Victoria to ask for coastal defenses.
  • The Grand Trunk Pacific Steamer Prince George to be outfitted as hospital ship.
  • Construction of the new Hudson's Bay store on Douglas Street in Victoria is having difficulty reaching suitable bedrock for a foundation in the north east corner of the lot.
  • In the Sunday pull-out section a full-page map of Europe is printed and there is an educational article immediately after the children's section about the high explosives being used in the war.
  • Sightings of a Zeppelin in Victoria are dismissed by the Gonzanles Hill Observatory as actually being the planet Venus (setting precedent for many a "U.F.O. sighting" of the future.)
