November 2017

On Tuesday, I started rewriting a true story, but with all the characters gender-flipped. The idea was just to undermine gender stereotypes and bias for a clearer picture, but something interesting started to happen that really underlines just how strong assumptions about gender can be: with the genders reversed the protagonist/antagonist, hero/villain, etc. rles swapped right along with them. The "truth" is somewhere between the two stories, but it is untellable without a mountain of cultural baggage around gender traits and rles tipping the scales. And how much of that is coming from me and my context? How much is just the point of view in the story (like Milton accidentally making the Devil the sympathetic character in "Paradise Lost")? What if I told the same story six ways: first person on one "side"; first person on the other; third person; and the the same three again with the genders reversed?

O.K., this is dangerous. I've been feeling a bit off this weekend (13 hours sleep Friday, 15 last night, still tired) and yesterday I discovered the absolute wealth of KSTW Channel 11, Sunday afternoon "SCI-FI THEATRE" grade awful movies from the 1950s and 60s that have slipped into the public domain. Terrible 50+ year-old movies generally mangling really good sci-fi from 100+ years ago? Yes, please.

Blown away: Batgirl/Barbara Gordon from the Adam West Batman and the crazy "green bitch" in the ST:OS episode "Whom the Gods Destroy" were played by the same actress, Yvonne Craig.

I made myself a present. A picture of the old building with a *bronze* penny and half-penny from the year it was built.

Probably another over-share, but this is 22 year old, 185 lb. me at the end of basic training. This is the new, probably unrealistic, goal. But then again, I thought getting down to 185 again wasn't realistic. It really makes a big difference not having someone around calling you fat and "hideously unattractive" (actual direct quote) to actually care enough about yourself enough to stick to getting back into shape. And yes, there is a story behind how I ended up naked and covered in beer, but if you want to hear that, you'll have to ask me IRL.

It occurred to me just now that I have been using this old syringe, one of my dad's insulin needles, to refill my pens for over half my life now. Dad died 24 years ago, and I got this from him at least a year before that. #stillmisshim
